99 PIERMONT AVENUE

"BUTTONWOOD"

"Buttonwood" is named for the grand 100-foot-tall sycamore tree that towers over the house and which dates back to the time when the house was built by Edward Towt. Right on the river with many interesting architectural details, this house, built in 1865, was vacant and deteriorating in the 1980s, and finally damaged by fire. In 1994 the property was put on the market. Most prospective purchasers wanted to tear it down. The Architect owner appreciating its potential, its location on the Hudson, and its close proximity to the village of Nyack, purchased the property and kept the house. The restoration maintained the shape of the house and made use of the original slate roof.
